The use of dermal fillers can help you regain that youthful look you once had. These injections can reduce lines and wrinkles, and can even prevent them from returning (to some extent, but not fully). The painless solution they offer to these problems is what intrigues people into taking them.

However, before you sign up for this cosmetic procedure, there are a few things you need to know about dermal fillers.

#1 How do dermal fillers work?

While both dermal fillers, as well as botox, are injectable drugs to enhance certain facial features, their working procedures are very different from one another.

Botox freezes certain facial muscles and prevents them from contracting. This, in turn, stops the formation of folds and wrinkles on the outer layer of the skin. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injectable implants. They help your skin to retain moisture, which allows for a more natural and wrinkle-free look.

Dermal fillers provide lift and support to your skin. They make it look more plump and hydrated, thanks to the moisture-holding implants released into the skin. These fillers are more effective against deep lines in comparison to botox.

#2 When to use dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are used for a variety of skin and facial feature enhancements. Different types of fillers are used to target different areas and problems of the skin.

Lip fillers are used to make thin lips look plump. Cheek fillers are used to improve the overall aesthetics of your face. They help to enhance your facial expressions and improve various aspects of your face while making sure that the skin retains a natural appearance.

Dermal fillers are widely used to keep the skin free of wrinkles and fine lines. They prevent the skin from contracting and forming folds, which in turn helps prevent the formation of wrinkles.

You can also use fillers to reduce stretch marks. These fillers, however, are very different from the ones used on faces.

#3 Precautions you need to take

Given that it’s a medical (cosmetic) procedure, you’ll have to take a few precautions before you take these injections.

The first and most important thing you have to do is to make sure that the doctor, who’ll be handling the procedure, is a licensed professional. The clinic, where the procedure is going to take place, also needs to be authorized to carry out such cosmetic procedures.

After you’re done verifying the legitimacy of the place and people involved with the whole procedure, you then need to restrict yourself from using certain products and services before taking the fillers.

At least two days before you take the fillers, you need to avoid waxing and bleaching your skin. You also need to put the use of hair removal creams and anti-aging products on hold. The chemicals used in these products can interfere with the effects of the dermal fillers. Hence, you should avoid them for a while.

You also need to avoid getting further cosmetic surgery or therapy up to two weeks from the day you take the fillers. Excessive use of makeup should also be avoided during this time.

#4 Costs

While botox and fillers work almost in the same way, there are a lot of differences among them. One big difference between the two is seen in terms of costs.

Botox is less costly in comparison to dermal fillers. A single unit of botox costs around $15-20 dollars. Thus, a full cosmetic procedure with botox can take around $150-200. Fillers are priced a bit higher. Their prices are set based on the number of syringes required in the procedure. Usually, a single syringe can cost around $500 on average. Sometimes the prices can go as high as $700.

#5 Results

Fillers are not permanent. In fact, none of the non-surgical cosmetic procedures can guarantee a permanent effect. While the results are noteworthy, and you can easily feel the differences in your face or skin, they’re likely to last for only a few months. Afterward, your skin will start to lose that touch. If you want, you can take the fillers again, and continue taking them for as long as you want, or as long as your skin can support them.

#6 Possible side-effects

Despite being a non-surgical procedure, dermal fillers come with their own risks.

Some of the most common side-effects of dermal fillers include redness, slight bruising and/or swelling, and mild pain. These effects, however, are quite minor and are likely to go away within a couple of weeks.
