If you find yourself wanting to improve the appearance of your teeth, but shy away from the thought of braces or invasive dental work, then dental veneers may be the right fit for you.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental Veneers are thin coverings or shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They look exactly like teeth and can help cover up any cosmetic issues.
Many people choose to try veneers instead of crowns or implants, as the cost is lower. It should be noted that in order to have veneers, you must have healthy teeth to begin with.
Veneers are custom-made to fit your teeth. They can help boost your self-confidence and desire to smile more often.
Benefits of Veneers
Dental veneers are used mainly to improve the appearance of your teeth. Some of the cosmetic imperfections that veneers are used for include:
- Teeth gaps
- Chipped or jagged teeth
- Smaller-than-average teeth
- Yellowing or discoloration that can’t be corrected with whitening
- Abnormally shaped teeth
Different Kinds of Veneers
2 different types of materials are used to make dental veneers. They can be manufactured with porcelain or composite resin. There are benefits to each of these.
Porcelain Veneers Benefits:
- Durable and Strong
- Long-lasting
- Very natural appearance
- Hard to stain
Composite Resin Benefits:
Cost
The Consumer Guide to Dentistry has shown that for porcelain veneers, one can expect to pay approximately $925 to $2,500 per tooth. These veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. Composite Resin veneers come in at around $250 to $1,500 per tooth and can last between 5 and 7 years.
Preparation
With any dental procedure, there are a few steps before the actual application. You will need to meet with your dentist to consult about the different options and which one is the best fit for you.
The dentist will determine how many veneers are needed and you’ll both decide on either porcelain or composite resin veneers.
Afterward, your dentist will most likely want to take X-rays to determine the health of your teeth. If your teeth are healthy and don’t show any decay or gum issues, you’ll be able to proceed with the procedure.
Another appointment will be set to take impressions of your teeth. Before this is done, your teeth will have to be trimmed down slightly to make room for the veneers. The amount that is trimmed will be influenced by what type of veneer you’ve chosen.
Once the mold of your teeth has set, it will be sent to the lab to be used to make your veneers.
Procedure
Once your veneers are ready, your dentist will evaluate them and make sure they will fit your teeth perfectly.
Your dentist will clean your teeth and create a rough surface with their grinding tool. This allows the veneer to bond more easily to your teeth.
Dental cement will be placed on your tooth and then the veneer will go on top. Ultraviolet light will cause the tooth to bond to the veneer.
Your veneers are now permanent, and you can now enjoy your new smile!
