How To Soften Brown Sugar

Brown sugar is a sucrose sugar product with a distinctive brown colour due to the presence of molasses(a thick brownish syrup produced in the refining of raw sugar).

Based on the total volume, commercial brown sugar contains about 3.6% molasses(light brown sugar) to 65% molasses (dark brown sugar. Then based on the total weight, commercial brown sugar contains about 9 to 10% molasses.

Brown sugar is produced by adding molases, not just ordinary molasses but sugarcane molasses to completely refined white sugar crystal to reduce the production costs and also control the ratio of the molasses to sugar Crystals.

It contains molasses giving it the brownish colour. It also contains slightly more minerals than white sugar. To your sweetner, It gives iron, potassium,  magnesium and calcium.

When being compared to white sugar based on nutritional benefits, it adds flavour and moistness but has no great nutritional benefits over the white sugar.

When you open your brown sugar and found out that it has stick together, don’t feel devastated nor disappointed, there are still ways to restore your brown sugar back to the way it was before.

How To Soften Brown Sugar

These are various ways to soften a brown sugar:

1) Place a lump of hardened sugar in a Small microwave safe bowl and cover it with a moist paper towel or clean thick cloth. Zap the brown sugar in the microwave for 18 to 20 seconds. You can break any big lumps with a fork in this process of microwaving the brown sugar.

 

2) Place a few slice of bread or a few slices of apple in a tight container together with the brown sugar, then remove the slices of apple or the slices of bread(depending on the one you used), when the sugar is soft.

 

3) Put the sugar in a glass or any material produced by the high temperature firing of inorganic, nonmetallic rocks and minerals like ceramic bowl. Then put it together with a moist paper towel and cover it with a clean plate or a lid.

 

4) Put a slightly wet or damp paper towel in a plastic bag or any material that has the shape of a bag. Put the damp paper towel together with the brown sugar in that plastic bag and microwave it for 20 seconds.

Then bring it out after twenty seconds and you will find yourself smiling, because the brown sugar has been restored to it’s original state.

 

5) Place the brown sugar in a bowl or in a large plate, cover it with a slightly wet clean cloth, and let it stay there throughout the night till day break. Then, by the following day, the brown sugar is softened.

 

6) Heat the oven to 220 degrees. Place the sticked hard sugar in an oven safe bowl and then warm it in the heated oven.

Make sure you always check it constantly and then in the process of checking it, you can as well be breaking the lumps with a fork, that is if you found any lump during the process of checking. Do this continuously the sugar is soft.

 

7) Place the hard brown sugar in a microwave and top with a slice of bread or damp towel. Cover it with a plastic wrap and microwave it for 15 to 20 seconds, until the sugar is soft.
