EP 583: Casey and Meygan Caston – The Power of Premarital Counseling in Shaping Lasting Relationships
From your experience, how does premarital counseling set couples on a path to a healthier, more resilient marriage?
It helps couples prepare for their marriage success. There was a stigma around counseling, but it’s becoming more acceptable to do this to set couples on the right path.
What are some common misconceptions or fears couples might have about premarital counseling, and how can they overcome them?
There is a misconception that it’s only for couples in crisis. But, that’s not true.
Can you share a success story or a transformative moment from one of your sessions that highlights the impact of counseling before marriage?
We worked with a couple where they were passive/aggressive in one area of their relationship. We taught them boundaries. They ended up not inviting certain family members, which was a difficult decision but an important boundary. They’re happily married and know how to set good boundaries.
We worked with another couple who were told by two counselors that they were doomed. We spent five sessions teaching them good communication skills, and they are happily married ten years later.
How does premarital counseling equip couples with tools to navigate future challenges, and what are some of the key lessons or topics covered?
We teach healthy relationship skills, like communication and boundaries. We also teach how to set real life expectations for relationships. We talk about future potential issues. We expose sensitive topics that need to be dealt with. For example, relationships with in-laws. We talk about money, childhood, sex – all the hot topics in a safe place to see where both people are.
We discuss 6 key topics:
- Communication
- Conflict and repair
- Family of origin (trauma that is hidden or not discussed)
- Money/finances (prenup? Separate or joint accounts?)
- Sex and intimacy
- Self-discovery (strengths, weaknesses)
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
When you’re looking for a healthy mate, look for someone with a growth mindset. If they’re evolving, I believe it’s so attractive. Look for humility and hunger to grow.
